Module 4: Supporting parents to prepare for labour and birth

Alongside this module, volunteers start to deliver one-to-one peer support either face to face or virtually. This module focuses on volunteers developing the skills and knowledge to be an effective birth partner during the first, second and third stages of labour. It also develops their skills and knowledge around pain management during labour, coping with and recovering from a caesarean section, and how to write a birth plan.

Throughout this module participants will need to refer to the M4 handout booklet for each session, which are downloadable within each drawer below:

This session helps volunteers develop the skills and knowledge to be an effective birth partner during the first stage of labour.

Introduce different helpful positions for women, and practical exercises including breathing exercises and relaxation

It includes activities that:

  • Introduce the simple physiology of labour and birth processes, including hormones
  • Enable peer supporters to identify different ways a woman may behave in labour, and understand that her behaviour will change throughout labour
  • Introduce different helpful positions for women, and practical exercises including breathing exercises and relaxation
  • Encourage peer supporters to reflect on their own emotions and experiences of childbirth.

This session helps volunteers develop the skills and knowledge to be an effective birth partner during the second and third stages of labour.

It includes activities that:

  • Introduce second and third stages of labour, including benefits of delaying cord clamping and skin-to-skin
  • Encourage peer supporters to reflect on their own emotions and experiences of childbirth, and enable others to do so (reinforcing active listening skills)
  • Equip volunteers with the knowledge and skills to support a woman adopt different positions during labour
  • Introduce the concept of informed choice and decision-making
  • Enable volunteers to practice hand and back massage to give comfort during labour and birth.

This session develops peer supporters’ skills and knowledge around managing pain during labour, coping with and recovering from a caesarean section, and how to write a birth plan.

It includes activities that:

  • Increase awareness and knowledge of different forms of pain relief (including water birth), and allows peer supporters to share personal experiences
  • Explore best ways to support a woman having a planned caesarean
  • Show how to support a woman after a caesarean, emotionally and physically (including practising active listening skills)
  • Enables a peer supporter to help expectant parents to write a birth plan.
