This module is for volunteers who have successfully completed module 2 and have met strict recruitment criteria for offering one-to-one support either virtually or in the home. Additional induction processes are delivered in tandem with this module e.g. lone working procedures when visiting the home.
This module aims to prepare participants to:
- Offer effective support by using a strengths-based framework for each one-to-one support session. This aims to equip volunteers to enable parents to reflect on their strengths, share reliable evidence-based information, and to self-select and achieve ongoing personal goals
- Help pregnant women to consider local birth options, prepare for breastfeeding, and to prepare for changes ahead
- Understand health and safety and safeguarding responsibilities.
Throughout this module participants will need to refer to the M3 handout booklets which are downloadable under each of the sessions listed below.
This session helps peer supporters to encourage expectant parents to strengthen family relationships in preparation for changes ahead.
It includes activities that:
- Explore why family relationships are important to the wellbeing of children
- Explore how family relationships can change during the transition to parenthood
- Help peer supporters recognize signs of relationship distress
- Offer resources they could share with expectant parents.

- Explore the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative
- Reflect on peer supporters’ own views of breastfeeding, so that they don’t cloud work with families
- Explore the benefits of breastfeeding and how best to share this information with families.

This session gives peer supporters an understanding of breastfeeding, including positioning and attachment. It outlines the support that a mother may need during the important first few weeks.
It includes activities that:
- Outline the basic physiology of breastfeeding and the importance of skin-to-skin contact
- Explore patterns of feeding, with an emphasis on supporting mothers to trust their own instincts
- Discuss positioning and attachment, including skills to support the mother and baby
- Explore the reasons why mothers may stop breastfeeding in the first days or weeks, and how to best support them during this time.
By the end of this session, volunteers need to have completed the induction process for delivering one-to-one support either face to face or virtually.
