Antenatal Appointments

Partners play an important role in supporting the expectant mother during pregnancy, and attending antenatal appointments is a key part of that support. Partners are entitled to take time off work to accompany the mother to these important appointments.

Partner's Entitlement to Antenatal Leave

As a partner, you are entitled to take unpaid leave to accompany the expectant mother to up to two antenatal appointments. This leave allows you to be there for key moments in the pregnancy, such as scans or consultations with healthcare providers.

  • You are entitled to take up to 6.5 hours per appointment. This time can be used for travel, waiting, and attending the appointment.
  • This entitlement applies to permanent employees immediately. Agency workers are also eligible, but they must complete 12 weeks of continuous employment before they qualify for this leave.

Antenatal Leave for Adoption

For those adopting, similar rights apply:

  • If you’re taking paternity leave as an adoptive parent, you’re entitled to unpaid leave for up to two adoption appointments. These appointments take place after you’ve been matched with a child.
  • If you’re the primary adopter, you’re entitled to paid leave for up to five adoption appointments. This ensures that you can be fully involved in the important steps leading up to welcoming a child into your family.

Making the Most of Your Leave

While the leave for antenatal or adoption appointments is unpaid, it provides an invaluable opportunity to be present for key stages of the pregnancy or adoption process. Many partners find attending these appointments helps them feel more connected and informed about the progress of the pregnancy or adoption.

It’s important to check your employer’s policy on antenatal leave, as some may offer more flexible arrangements or allow for additional time off. You can also discuss your options with HR to ensure everything is arranged well in advance of the appointments.
