To understand whether or not your programme is likely to achieve its outcomes, the first thing to know is if you are delivering the programme as designed and as intended.
What to measure
Start by working out which key elements of the programme design, if not delivered properly, will cause the programme to fail. Use the programme’s Theory of Change to do this.
For example:
- Your programme is specifically designed for mothers under the age of 20. Key measurement: the age of mothers who are referred and taken on to the programme.
- For your group support programme to work it is essential that the group members attend at least 80% of the sessions. Key measurement: attendance by each group member at each session.
How to measure
These different key measures have differing implications for the time and skills required to collect the data. So remember to think carefully about how you could collect the data before starting to use a measure.
