Different types of model to consider

There are several peer support models to consider. Take some time to think about what type of model (or mixture of models) best fits the parent/infant outcomes you are seeking and what would work in your local area.

Different models of intensity of impact of volunteers on vulnerable families

Community champions are about passing on messages. Activities may be organised (e.g. a stand at an antenatal clinic or fair) or spontaneous (e.g. at school gates).

Groups may be structured or unstructured, closed or drop-in.

One-to-one support  can vary in length and intensity depending on individual need. It can be an end in itself or a stage preceding a group (includes home visiting and may also include support during labour and birth, and support to access a service).

Three models, their strengths and their weaknesses

The Parents 1st Community Parent Model uses a combination of all three models. Our Manual Guide: Parents 1st Community Parent Model has more information and is downloadable below.

Whilst these peer support models have been shown to work, they still won’t work unless they are effectively implemented, and volunteers are properly supported in their roles locally.
