Mental health for men: Simon shares his story of fatherhood, loss and the road to recovery

11 years ago, Simon and his wife became parents. Simon's wife has suffered with mental health issues for almost 20 years, but during the first pregnancy things were manageable and stable. After the birth of their son, his wife was signposted to group peer support by her health visitor which helped her to navigate the transition to parenthood.

Years later, they fell pregnant again, and things went well up until the 3rd trimester. With the help of the perinatal mental health team, Simon's wife started taking medication that was safe for her and the baby and they were able to put a plan together for the birth and beyond.

However, following a traumatic birth their daughter sadly died just 7 hours after she was born.

PANDAS Dads  This is a closed Facebook group for Dads suffering from perinatal illness or supporting their partner through that time.

Shout Crisis Text Line Text SHOUT to 85258 to text with a trained crisis volunteer 24/7.

Anxiety UK: 03444775774 (9:30am–10pm Mon–Fri 10am–8pm Sat & Sun) or text 'support' on 07537416 905. There are also regular online support groups.

The Birth Trauma Association Have some basic advice for partners who are looking for ways to help a birth traumatised woman or, for help for their own feelings after witnessing a traumatic birth.

Child Bereavement UK Provide confidential support, information and guidance to individuals, families and professionals throughout the UK.

CALM Their helpline and webchat are open 365 days a year for those struggling with life, offering practical suggestions for all of life’s problems - whether that’s anxiety, relationship concerns, health worries, money worries or suicidal thoughts. 

AndysManClub A men's suicide prevention charity offering free peer-to-peer support groups across the UK and online.
