This week is Safer Sleep Week 2025! It’s The Lullaby Trust's national awareness campaign targeting anyone looking after a young baby. The Lullaby Trust gives advice and information that helps to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Following the Lullaby Trust advice for every sleep, day and night has helped save 30,000 babies since 1991!
Sadly, around four babies a week still die from SIDS. At Parents 1st we want to spread awareness to all parents and carers of infants in the hope that number can decrease significantly.
Here are the basics for safer sleep:
Baby sleeps in their own separate sleep space (a cot or moses basket) in the same room as you for the first 6 months
- Lay your baby on their back
- Keep their cot clear
- Use a firm, flat, waterproof mattress
- Keep baby smoke-free
- Avoid your baby getting too hot
The Lullaby Trust recommends that you follow this expert advice until your child is 12 months old (this is adjusted for premature or low birthweight babies).
It is important that your baby’s room is a comfortable temperature of between 16-20 degrees. You can purchase a room thermometer and monitor this so that your baby does not overheat.
“The safest cot is a clear cot” is worth remembering! This means no pillows or duvets, cot bumpers, soft toys or comforters, bulky bedding etc.
Here are some do's and don'ts to help keep your baby safe.
