Commissioner of Mental Health Services
28 years in 'health & social care' ... and I am a parent.
I spent 14 years working in the voluntary sector in service areas where peer support and harnessing the expertise of those with lived experience was growing rapidly and with a very positive impact.
Since returning to the statutory sector, and for the first time as a commissioner, I am excited to put that experience to good use and to try and put service recipients at the front and centre of design and delivery.
It was great to discover Parents1st, a community and platform that promotes and shares the benefiets of peer support. I think communities like this can propogate the idea of "dual citizenship" (credit to Mark Gillman for the expression)- as human beings we are all potential users of services and givers of services. Recognising this can lay the patform for breaking down barriers and power imbalances between 'professionals' and 'patients' because we are all in fact, both of these and by collaborating, we will dleiver more effective, more inclusive services.
